the great balancing act ….

27 Nov

I am off today thankfully.  Trying to get caught up and my first instinct is to write an awesome blog post because it has been awhile.  Time is so cruel sometimes….grrrr.   Anyway,  so I see here that I have saved about 4 drafts of unfinished blog entries.  As of now, they are still sitting in my drafts.  I have one that covers all types of makeup brushes, one about perfume and yet another on my top 5 beauty products.  As I have discovered since beginning this blog site, it takes time and accuracy to create these posts.  I want them to be full of worthy information as well as include lots of cool photos.  My work schedule has been extremely busy in the past month and that has lent itself to incomplete entries.  Not good 😦

Well the buck stops here!

As much as I like a regular paycheck, I realized that trying to work full time, take care of my family AND get my new business off the ground was not working out so well.  The hours that go along with retail are not workable in my situation.  I can’t possibly get everything done.  So as of December 1st, I am 100% on my own and getting my freelance business off the ground.  I am marketing myself like crazy, meeting lots of new people and making myself available to every opportunity possible.  This will also allow me to work on my websites and my personal favorite, my blog site.  I need to get camera and video savvy in a hurry to keep this site feeling fresh and inspiring!!

This adventure has been the best ever and I want to devote all of my energy to working in and talking about the profession I love so much.  I am looking forward to diving right in and getting Supernatural Makeup Design off to a great start for 2013!

time for night owl to detox…willingly

7 Nov

I am doing a juice fast!  I have never done this before.  I tried when we got our amazing Omega Juicer over the summer.  A friend of ours lost about 17 lbs juicing and could not talk more about the benefits.  I found it tasty but unfulfilling.  I needed more substance because I love to eat and the plain ol’ juice wasn’t inspiring me to continue on a daily basis.  I will be honest and say my main reason is to thin out a bit.  I moved to Utah and gained 15lbs and I can’t seem to loose it.  I doesn’t help that my honey and I will get the munchies at midnight and eat really bad.  Like a two pound PB&J kind of bad washed down with cheese and crackers.  We are night owls…  what can I say.  HUNGRY night owls 🙂

So I realized that I like the consistent of blending my fruit and veggies.  I throw in some almonds and now we’re talking.  It is full of fiber, the texture is more like a meal and it is so delicious.  You really have to like the different taste that a green smoothie can offer in order to enjoy it.  My honey won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole BUT he will juice a beautiful sweet potato and some kale and ginger.  For me,  I throw in cilantro, kale, romaine and spinach.  A frozen banana for some thickness and blueberries for antioxidant properties.  I follow that with some almonds (unsalted) and I am full and feeling satisfied.  I am on day two and I am already feeling way better.  I just needed a kick start to eat right during the holiday season.  I am a huge fan of Weight Watchers but not of the monthly cost.  I did belong last year and noticed that the way they do it suits me and my eating habits.  I love to eat everything and yes I had to count points but that made me more aware of my choices.  I am going to follow a version of that once my fast is over.  When I hit Lotto, maybe I will consider joining again.

Be good to your body during this carb filled holiday season.  Consider a 3 day fast with a combination of juicing and blending your veggies and fruits.  You would be surprised at how your body reacts.  My entire digestive system is thanking me and my clothes are already fitting better.  Follow with a nice brisk walk and your on the road to staying fit and feeling great.  Check out my favorite green smoothie recipe below and tell me what you think.  This is courtesy of Cookie and Kate’s blog page.

Green  Machine Smoothie
Author: Cookie and Kate
Prep time: 5 mins
Ingredients
  • 1 granny smith apple (preferably organic), cut into big pieces or one pear
  • 2 cups of kale (pull leaves from two stalks to make two cups) or 2 cups spinach
  • 1 lime (juiced or remove the seeds and add the flesh, too) or one lemon
  • 1 small handful of cilantro (pull the leaves from the stalks)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons ginger (mine came from a jar but you can grate fresh ginger instead)
  • 1/3 cup chopped frozen banana (entirely optional, add if you want a more creamy texture)
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve with a straw.
Notes
Yields about 12 ounces, so it makes one large smoothie or two small.

The combination of citrus, cilantro and ginger gives this smoothie a refreshing zing. Based on rough calculations, the smoothie comes in at about 200 calories, with 11 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, over 700% of the Vitamin A and 260% of the Vitamin C you need for a day, and a long list of other vitamins.

Some tips and tricks..

2 Nov

I have had the opportunity to learn some really useful tricks to make it appear that I know what I am doing when presenting the best face possible.  It is not always easy some days when things like pimples pop up or maybe you noticed the huge, saggy bags under your eyes that cool cucumbers didn’t quite fix.  Every morning can present a different situation and it will need to be dealt with.  Ugh!

I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a reliable skin care routine.  Ladies – even if you are 20, it is imperative to use sunscreen and moisturize.  This is to prevent the early signs of aging and wrinkles that start to hit us in our 30’s and set in every minute of the day, every day of the year til we die.  In order for our products to work properly, our skin needs to be cleaned and exfoliated.  Washing your face without exfoliation is comparable to brushing your teeth with your finger.  It will sort of clean things up but not really.  Our eye creams and moisturizers need to sink into open, clean skin so with that being said, I now will talk about the Clarsonic.

This life changing cleansing system offers up a daily massage for your face to get your morning going or comfort you into a dreamy sleep.  Using the Clarsonic will clean your skin of all of the days impurities and allow your skin care products to get right in there and do their job.  I do hundreds of skin care/makeup consultations during the week and during our conversation, people cannot believe my age.  I truly believe this is because of my Clarsonic which I have been using for about two years now.

Next little tip is the “Fatigue Fighter”.  This goodie is tried and true and will work even after you have a full face of makeup on.  Start by taking your favorite concealer and mixing a little bit of your eye cream or even eye serum.  Swirl both products in equal amounts onto the back of your hand and using your small concealer brush, swipe gently under your eyes and up into the corner of your face.  Add more concealer as needed.  (It is ok to use your fingers for this but please always use your ring finger when applying anything under your eyes.  This finger offers the least amount of pressure than your others and will not cause further damage to this already sensitive area.)  Anyway, this will no doubt give your eyes a refresh from the middle of the day wearies.  Be sure to use an eye cream that offers de-puffing and dark circle benefits.  Also be sure to use a concealer that is ONE shade lighter than your foundation (or skin tone if your don’t use foundation).

Lastly, let’s start thinking about a more dramatic look to compliment your holiday festivities.  A simple smokey eye can add lots of pizazz to your normal makeup routine.  Start by using your favorite eyeliner and creating a half inch circle on the back of your hand.  Really get a nice thick layer on there.  Then take a little bit of concealer and mix together.  This will create a shadow creme.  Take your finger and apply this mixture to your eyelid being real careful to cover completely.  Concentrate on staying just below the crease line.  Take a bit and put underneath your bottom lash line as well.  Next take a matte color that will match the shadow creme you just applied and layer on top.  Then blend into a soft, subtle smokey eye.  Take this look wherever you want.  It can be super dramatic or stay soft and smokey.

Please let me know if any or all of these tips work for you! I have dozens of fun little anecdotes to share. Feel free to share some of yours.  We would never get anywhere exciting without learning from each other.

Note:

I realize that pictures and videos enhance the entire “how to” experience” of this post and I clearly suffer in this instance.   I am working on getting better at this and will hopefully have a you tube channel dedicated to my blog by the end of the year.  I really do enjoy doing this and if I can move into the 21st century then it would be an even better experience.

Enjoy your day:)
