time for night owl to detox…willingly

I am doing a juice fast!  I have never done this before.  I tried when we got our amazing Omega Juicer over the summer.  A friend of ours lost about 17 lbs juicing and could not talk more about the benefits.  I found it tasty but unfulfilling.  I needed more substance because I love to eat and the plain ol’ juice wasn’t inspiring me to continue on a daily basis.  I will be honest and say my main reason is to thin out a bit.  I moved to Utah and gained 15lbs and I can’t seem to loose it.  I doesn’t help that my honey and I will get the munchies at midnight and eat really bad.  Like a two pound PB&J kind of bad washed down with cheese and crackers.  We are night owls…  what can I say.  HUNGRY night owls 🙂

So I realized that I like the consistent of blending my fruit and veggies.  I throw in some almonds and now we’re talking.  It is full of fiber, the texture is more like a meal and it is so delicious.  You really have to like the different taste that a green smoothie can offer in order to enjoy it.  My honey won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole BUT he will juice a beautiful sweet potato and some kale and ginger.  For me,  I throw in cilantro, kale, romaine and spinach.  A frozen banana for some thickness and blueberries for antioxidant properties.  I follow that with some almonds (unsalted) and I am full and feeling satisfied.  I am on day two and I am already feeling way better.  I just needed a kick start to eat right during the holiday season.  I am a huge fan of Weight Watchers but not of the monthly cost.  I did belong last year and noticed that the way they do it suits me and my eating habits.  I love to eat everything and yes I had to count points but that made me more aware of my choices.  I am going to follow a version of that once my fast is over.  When I hit Lotto, maybe I will consider joining again.

Be good to your body during this carb filled holiday season.  Consider a 3 day fast with a combination of juicing and blending your veggies and fruits.  You would be surprised at how your body reacts.  My entire digestive system is thanking me and my clothes are already fitting better.  Follow with a nice brisk walk and your on the road to staying fit and feeling great.  Check out my favorite green smoothie recipe below and tell me what you think.  This is courtesy of Cookie and Kate’s blog page.

Green  Machine Smoothie

Prep time: 5 mins
Ingredients
  • 1 granny smith apple (preferably organic), cut into big pieces or one pear
  • 2 cups of kale (pull leaves from two stalks to make two cups) or 2 cups spinach
  • 1 lime (juiced or remove the seeds and add the flesh, too) or one lemon
  • 1 small handful of cilantro (pull the leaves from the stalks)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons ginger (mine came from a jar but you can grate fresh ginger instead)
  • 1/3 cup chopped frozen banana (entirely optional, add if you want a more creamy texture)
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve with a straw.
Notes
Yields about 12 ounces, so it makes one large smoothie or two small.

The combination of citrus, cilantro and ginger gives this smoothie a refreshing zing. Based on rough calculations, the smoothie comes in at about 200 calories, with 11 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, over 700% of the Vitamin A and 260% of the Vitamin C you need for a day, and a long list of other vitamins.
