Upcoming tutorial – How to make an inspiration book for makeup!

 

This week has been crazy for me.  I interviewed for a dream opportunity last week and I am waiting on the final answer.  To keep my good energy flowing, I have been doing a number of fun things that will no doubt work to my advantage in the long run.  One thing I have been doing is creating a “look book” for makeup.  I subscribe to every beauty magazine out there and I am constantly wowed by the beautiful makeup.  So I decided to put all my loves into one book (and get rid of the hundreds of magazines I own).  It will serve a few purposes. 

One – I am constantly working on my technique and use of color so seeing new trends and practicing them allows me to grow within my craft. 

Two  – It keeps me inspired to continue on down this path.  I find that when I am surrounded by what I love, it keeps me motivated, even when work is slow. 

When I want to play, I take out my beautiful makeup collection and scrapbook and practice!!  Maybe it is a new twist on an old technique?  Maybe I’m working with a new consistency or makeup line that I have not used yet?  Who knows! I do know that I am inspired 24/7 and that is always a good thing 🙂

I will do an entire “how to” blog on the easiest way to create this type of book.  For now, I will wait for the phone to ring, try to stay focused and hopefully get a great post on making a cool look book that you will use time and time again.  Plus this way, it keeps me on the hook to do it.  I can very easily wallow in my own self doubt which will make me completely immobile and that’s no good.

Keep it clean!

As a working makeup artist, sanitation and hygiene are essential. Proper sanitation and care of your kit will prevent cross contamination, infection and disease as well as ensure the longevity of your cosmetics and the health of your clients.

 

91% alcohol is a must as well as plenty of disposable sponges and puffs

A few things to remember when you set up.

1. Always, disinfect the work surface before unpacking your kit.
2. Always, work from a clean sanitized steel palette with disinfected brushes, tools, and cosmetics.
3. Always, be mindful of sanitation practice while working.
4. Keep hand sanitizer, alcohol, cosmetic sanitizer and brush cleaner on hand at all times.

My basic set up. Staying clean and organized is what will be noticed (sometimes more than the makeup)

 Proper ways to dispense makeup while keeping it clean and safe when working are below.

Moisturizers/Primers: Dispense product onto steel palette, wipe nozzle/tip clean with tissue, place cap on product. Use a brush to apply product to client.

Liquid Foundations/Concealers: Dispense product onto steel palette (by pumping, pouring, or dipping cotton swab into product; do not double dip), wipe nozzle/opening clean with tissue, place cap on product. Use a brush to apply product to client.

Cream Foundations/Concealers/Blushes/Gels: Scrape out product onto steel palette with a plastic or stainless steel spatula. Use a brush to apply product to client.

Powder Foundations/Blushes/Eye shadows: Use a brush to apply product to client. Spray the product with 91% alcohol .  Allow to dry. Optional step: Wipe surface clean with a tissue.

Loose Powders: Tap product onto steel palette. Use a brush or sponge to apply product to client.

Eye & Lip Pencils: Apply product to client. Wipe surface and wipe or dip in 91% isopropyl or higher alcohol; allow to dry. Sharpen pencil. D

 

Liquid/Gel/Glitter Liners: Apply product to onto steel palette. Use a liner brush to apply product to client or dip a disposable liner brush into product, apply to client. Do not double dip; use another disposable applicator  if more product is needed.

Mascara: Use disposable mascara wands! Dip into mascara tube, bend the brush to a 90* angle, apply product to client. Do not double dip; use another disposable applicator, if more product is needed.

Lipstick: As a make-up artist, my advice to aspiring make-up artists is to de tube your lipsticks and organize them into palettes. It’s easiest and quickest to work with when they’re in this fashion. All you’ll have to do is scrape out what you need, apply onto a steel palette and work from there. Discard after 1 year.

Lip gloss: Use disposable doe foot or lip brush applicators. Dip into lip gloss tube, apply product to client. Do not double dip: use another disposable applicator, if more product is needed. Discard after 1 year.

Have a designated zip-lock bag for disposables and dirty brushes as well as your own trash bag.  I use a small brown bag that I fold over to dispense tissues and such.

Once your work is done, disinfect the outside of all products, bags, and pouches as you place them back into your kit.

Please if you are using alcohol on your cosmetics, be sure to use the highest isopropyl alcohol percentage available to you. This will ensure quicker drying time thus less damage to your cosmetics. For example, if you want to disinfect eye shadows, simply spray alcohol onto a tissue and wipe clean the surface of the eye shadow.

 

Lipstick and some other stuff…

So I’ve been having some major technology issues.  I wound up giving in to my frustration and letting that all go.  I’ve been basically off the grid for a while and it has been a nice, well deserved vacation.  But now I’m equipped to get back at it.  I can’t lie and say that I haven’t enjoyed doing things at my pace as opposed to someone else’s.  That feeling of slaving away for an entity other than myself is what led me to where I am today.  Kinda poor but free from the chaos.  Now it’s only the chaos that I create that I deal with (and that’s no picnic).

So today’s musings are about this wonderful lip pencil I received today.  It is unlike anything I’ve ever used.  This is kind of embarrassing because I LOVE makeup and doing makeup is what I do for a living so not knowing about this little pencil of goodness is well…..you know.

This lip pencil is from Merle Norman and it is called the clear lip pencil.  It is pretty much a wax based pencil that is applied to stop any bleeding from lipstick.  Now I’ve been know to sport a pretty serious dark lip but I’ve always, always used a lip liner that closely matched my lip color.  This worked and looked great so why change?  Change is good.  Today I received a few products from Merle Norman that I cannot ever live without. I’ve never used this brand before so I was a bit hesitant but after carefully applying my new treasures, I am hooked.

The clear lip pencil was applied as I would normally apply my everyday lip liner.  This was followed by a BEAUTIFUL lipstick named Hussy.  It is a dark red type color that looked amazing against my new tan 🙂

Well I’ll be!!  My lipstick looked amazing and I noticed I liked the look of my lips not being overly done by using a dark lip liner to match the lip color.  It was more a natural yet sexy, bitten lip type of look.  And wouldn’t you know it?  No bleeding from the lip color.  I wore it for a full 4 hours before I needed to reapply.  I highly recommend both of these products but the clear lip pencil being top priority.

If you’re like most people you panic just before a scheduled photo shoot. You think to yourself “Oh, I’m going to look like a fool!” or “I’m too overweight to look good in photos.” As a glamour and boudoir photographer I’ve seen people panic at their shoot and I’ve heard all the reasons why they don’t look good when they get their picture taken.

I say poppycock! Everybody can look amazing in front of the camera. Everybody! No matter your size or body type you can look amazing in a photograph, you just need a few posing tips to boost your confidence.

Tip #1 – Don’t stand straight up and down.

Standing stick straight, rarely works in a glamour or boudoir portrait, or any portrait for that matter. As a general rule of thumb, if it bends – bend it. Your body will have beautiful curves and be more appealing to the eye.

This straight up and down pose doesn’t do much for her figure and it makes for a boring shot.

This is much better and more exciting. By shifting her weight on her hip she has emphasized her curves and created a more pleasing pose. You may also notice that she’s bent both elbows and her wrist creating more feminine angles that are more pleasing and create energy that leads the eye.

Tip #2 – Raise your chin.

Women have a tendency to lower their chin in an effort to hide even the slightest hint of a double chin. Unfortunately lowering your chin does the opposite, it accentuates a double chin. If your photographer shoots you from slightly above eye level, this can be easily avoided.

Tip #3 – Arch your back.

Arching your back will do a number of things to your pose – it pulls your shoulders back, forces your chest out, flattens your stomach and makes your booty pop.

Don’t underestimate the power an arched back has on your posture and on sexy curves.

Tip #4 — Don’t always worry about making eye contact.

It’s true — the eyes are the window to the soul. But don’t get caught in the trap of looking directly into the camera for every photo.

Sometimes looking away from camera can convey more meaning, be more sensual and help accentuate your naturally beautiful lines.

Tip #5 – Move, let it all go, have fun and be you.

I know it doesn’t sound like a posing tip, but it is. Some of the best photographs are the shots that were not planned. They are pure serendipity. Every time you hear the shutter click – unless told otherwise by your photographer – move! Get a broad range of shots for each outfit in your wardrobe.

Even if you feel silly, or you trip, or you get tangled in your dress — it doesn’t matter, move. If you feel like laughing, laugh. If you feel like crying, cry. If you feel like dancing, dance! Just move.

Your photo session is about capturing the most beautiful you that you can be. The most beautiful you doesn’t happen when you have a rigid pose, or when you are worried about looking your best. It happens when you let it all go, relax and just be you. Move around and have fun during your photo session and you’ll get the best photographs you’ve had in your life.

Even if you haven’t scheduled your photo session with me, I hope that these tips will help you feel more comfortable next time you step in front of a camera. Remember, you’re beautiful and you’re worth every picture!

my “office” ??

In my world, organization is of the utmost importance.  Some (but not all) expectations of a makeup artist are:

1) tools/makeup are spotless
2) has anything and everything
3) can work out of anywhere

Sometimes number 3 is a tall order…………………

I have a usual set up when I go to a gig.  I like to get my basics out and in front of me.  Moisturizer, makeup remover, water, brushes, brush cleaner, 99% alcohol (for sanitation), bobby pins, q tips, wands (eyes/lips),  sponges, primer (eyes/face), mixing palate, lip balm (the list can go on for days).  Then my foundation palate, blusher, eyes makeup and  anything specialized.  Hair stuff to the side and tissues front and center.

That is pretty standard and how I like my makeup station to be (see organized station above).

Sometimes base camp is a bathroom or someone’s kitchen (with people still cooking.  What???).  Not always so conducive for creating beauty but we do it and ultimately, we love the challenge!!   On one shoot, I was asked to do the  makeup for our models outside.   In 10 degree weather.  From the back of my car!?!  It was freeeeezing but our models were such great sports and my client was super thankful we made it happen!

This is happening…

While I learn how to better manage my time, I wanted to give a quick update on some things I have been working on and some major shout outs.  I have been networking away for the past few months and what seemed impossible has become possible.  All it took was a little faith, confidence in my work and honestly, some super cool people.  Trying to break into a new industry in a new place can be daunting but I have come into my own circle of friends who are quickly becoming family.

In January, we finished shooting the Z-Strain.  A zombie movie that I was able to try out my special effects skills on.  I worked with a great crew and got some more experience with the special effects side of the business.  This is something I am definitely going to pursue.  Please visit and like Z Strain on Facebook.

In late January, I had the amazing opportunity to do makeup for Becky Swanson of Late Night Alumni.  They were performing at Ruby Skye in San Fransisco and while my honey was running the lights, I was getting Becky stage ready!  Very very special thanks to not only Becky  but to John Hancock as well as Tracey and Finn Bjarnson.  They have been a great supporters of my endeavor and I am very grateful for them.  Check out some of the smooth sounds of LNA.

In early February, I was lucky enough to attend a makeup school in New York.  I was working under Mitch Ely, who is an excellent teacher and one I learned extensively with.  He is the MUA for CNN currently but some of his background is in film which is where I am leaning towards.  Our curriculum involved makeup, application of makeup and trends of the century.  This was followed by an awesome day of photo shoots in a gorgeous NYC building.  We just happened to be right next to Studio 54 so the inspiration was already there for me.  Mitch does p/t teaching for Last Looks Academy which hosts all kinds of makeup classes nationwide.  Our working set up was amazing as was the models we worked on.  Mitch patiently taught us how to apply makeup starting with the 1920’s all the way through to current day.  The tips and tricks he offered came from many years of tried and true.  Many that I have begun to apply in my world.  Our last day was our opportunity to shoot with 5 different models using 5 different looks.  Basically anything I wanted to showcase.  We had a photographer who took amazing photos of our models and we all walked away with fabulous photos to add to our portfolios.  I should get the final shots soon and I will most definitely share.  Here is a link to my photos during the photo shoot.

Next step was meeting a great photographer with a great message.  Cameron VanAusdal owner of CNV Studios is a portrait photographer that has slowly gotten into the “boudoir” photo sessions.  I will be guest blogging monthly on his website.  The main focus of this blog is to empower us as women to fully understand our potential.  Beauty is so subjective and once we learn to look within ourselves (instead of in the mirror) we can truly shine.  Please visit his new site at www.wortheverypicture.com and keep an eye out for my articles as well as other guest bloggers.

I also had the opportunity to work with the lovely Samantha Mitchell.  She is producer, art director and photographer for ESEM productions.  She is not only awesome at what she does, she is a Brooklyn girl so it was a nice surprise to talk some NY with her.  I was feeling a bit homesick after being in the city for a week so needless to say, the shoot went well.  That couldn’t have happened without the help of a fellow MUA, Megan Reilley.  She keeps me posted on new opportunities and I finally had the chance to work with her on my next project, Proper Manors.  Megan is another inspiration in my life.  I am grateful to know her.

So Proper Manors is a local web drama that just started shooting season two but more on that later.  None of this would be happening if it wasn’t for my wonderful friend and guardian angel, Cate Allen.  I met her at a Utah Film Commission luncheon and she took me under her wing.  I worked with her on Z-Strain (which she choose me to work on) and that’s when the magic happened.  She has sent me countless job opportunities and even helped me with my resume.  She has been instrumental in keeping my confidence up even when work is dry.  She is an amazing actress and producer as well as a savvy business woman.  She hosts a radio talk show each week on Ktalk Utah.  Please tune in Mondays at 9am MST to hear what she is up too.  Her show “Celebrating Women” discusses businesses and topics that involve and celebrate the uniqueness of being a woman, while giving practical insight to everyone. Celebrating Women highlights local and national women-friendly businesses, interests, and products. Celebrating Women is the “go to” outlet for women to access viable information, discounts, and solutions.

Whew. OK.  Proper Manors.  Co-creator, agent, actor and all around great guy (I am sure he is more)..  Pietro D’Allessio asked me to join his team of MUA’s for his series Proper Manors.  As it turns out, our Head of Makeup Dept from last year took another position and I am now the onsite lead (Key MUA).  I am so grateful to Johnnett Bailey Robinson for trusting me to make it happen.  She was onsite for all of (long) season one and got the flow down to a science.  I feel great about our first weekend of shooting and I am confident I am maintaining the same momentum from last year in her absence.  The cast and crew of Proper has been probably the nicest part about this project.  Even after three, 14 hour days, (an hour and a half away from my home)…..I am extremely excited to be on set working with everyone.  It doesn’t even feel like I worked one hour.  That’s when you know your doing something right.  A side note on Pietro and his wonderful wife Tina..  They have welcomed me with open arms and they surround themselves with such great people that it truly is a pleasure going to work each day.  As I have started to meet more of the crew, I see why they are a family.  The atmosphere is one of love and laughs and I am certain Proper Manors will become the original vision it was intended to be.

Thank you to my friend and neighbor, Lora Garlitz of La Belle Luminere Photography who encourgaed me to take some pro head shots and my son Joseph and his girlfriend Melissa, who tweeted my website to thier many followers.  I am at 3100 likes!!  Woo hoo!!

This is just a few of the people that have given me the strength to continue on.  Thank you to my family and  I am eternally grateful to my hunnee as well.  I couldn’t do any of this without his endless support and encouragement.  I hope I can do the same for him.

What is going on with my hair?

See that pug’s hairdo?  Well this is how my hair is feeling lately.  (He does look so cute though).  Anyway……many of you that know me know that I am a short-haired gal.  Usually pixie short.  Sometimes a bit longer but never, EVER…….where it’s gotten to now (sorry no pic to show of me now, just envision the pug)

     Long story short, I have worn it this way since 1997.  I was 6 months pregnant with my son Nicholas and I had two little guys to contend with so my long, curly, Long Island frizz bomb of a hairdo was not working out.  So in I walked to my local salon and out walked a big belly with a no fuss haircut.  I loved it!!  Gone were the days looking for barrettes, banana clips (yes, a banana clip)  or scrunchies.   All I needed to do was gel it in place and I was ready for the day.  It suited my face and my routine.  Plus when my hair is short, it makes the face more of a canvass for some seriously pretty makeup.  I have gotten countless compliments and yup…  I was pretty happy.

     Fast forward to today.  15 years later and I am getting antsy.  I am no longer working for a corporation where my hair needs to be coiffed each day. I am getting kind of lax with it and wearing hats while letting it grow out.  The problem is……I have no idea what I am growing it into.  I see lots of pictures and I get a bit crazy envisioning dreads, curls or just big crazy hair with streaks.  Anything but the normal ponytail or bun.  That was why I cut it in the first place 😦

     So now I am seeing pictures of these cute little bobs that I am kind of digging.  Alexa Chung for example is what I am secretly coveting.

     But then I see Ruby Rose and I am stunned by how stylish she is and it’s her hair that makes the whole look work.  Her face is amazing!

I like the sides but for my face, not so bang heavy.  I kind of like the purple streaks too 🙂  BTW -My Hubby doesn’t like this either 😦

I like this one…not sure if I can pull of the top though.

I like Victoria Beckham’s hair and I feel like I might be able to pull this off.  It might be high maintenance. Guess who doesn’t like this one as well?  LOL.

I really like the curls here.  I can have the height that I need and go as crazy as I want too.

These are pretty as well.  I just feel like it might be kind of boring for my face.

Halston

My love for perfume started in my teens.  As of this writing, I probably own over 150 bottles/samples of perfume and I love every one of them.  Admittedly  – it has at times overtaken my life.   I do not consider this a bad thing per say but only a beautiful hobby.  It started with Halston.  Halston Classic came out in 1975 but I didn’t get my chance to love it until about 1988 (about 16 years old).  In my house, Chanel #5 ruled the roost.  My mom was a Chanel #5 addict.  Her dresser bore only that sleek black tube that was her scent.

Everything she owned smelled of this classic.  I liked it but it was a bit flowery for my taste.  Plus at the time, I didn’t want to smell like my mom.

I don’t remember how I came across Halston but I do know that it stopped me in my tracks when I smelled it.  It was unlike anything I was used to and I had to have it.  It was probably on sale at our local drug store which tells how I was miraculously able to afford it.  The bottle was designed by Elsa Peretti and  notes included things like  sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk, oakmoss, vetiver and incense.  I of course…fell in love 🙂

For me, once I love something so intensely (much like my love for F. Scott Fitzgerald), I need to know everything about it so I began my research on the man who created this masterpiece.  I found that he was so chic, he only went by one name.  Halston.

Roy Halston Frowick at the time I found him was two years from departing this earth.  He had not publicly acknowledged his illness that would eventually take his life in 1990.  I imagine in 1988 he was just starting to feel the effects from constant partying during his heyday.  He and his entourage were the “IT” crowd at Studio 54 when it opened.  Google anything on Studio 54 and you will no doubt come across photos of Halston and his friends. And now,  he had already been in the limelight, found fame, fortune and by this time unfortunately his body and mind grew weary and he was soon to be gone.  I was so sad that his light was burning out and he had now been labeled a sell out due to his association with JC Penny.  He was no longer the beautiful man draped on Liza Minnelli’s arm at  Studio 54 or remembered as the creator of Jacqueline Kennedy’s famous pillbox hat.

He was a shadow of his former self having sold his own name to corporate giants that did not share his vision.    I didn’t care.  I was obsessed with not only the man but his clothes.  So elegant and carefree.  I would see photos of Bianca Jagger and Angelica Houston looking ravishing.  I was in complete awe (honestly, I still am).

I just watched a documentary on Netflix titled ” Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston”. 

I found myself getting sucked right back into my former obsession and I immediately caught a whiff of my beloved Halston perfume.  Scents can bring you anywhere you want to be and I wanted to be 16 again, remembering how excited I was as I was learning about myself as an individual.   Without even knowing it, that period of time was to be my initiation into myself.  Now 40, I am still the same girl in love with  same things.

Special F/X fix

I will be honest and say that I never really enjoyed January.   Or even February for that matter. If it’s January that means that the holidays are over, the tree  is down and the holiday spirit is quickly displaced.  I always struggled to switch gears.

Good news!  My 2013 was all the sudden not so depressing.  My January is full of things that are cool and awesome.   I have been working with a great group of filmmakers and actors/actresses for the past week and I have noticed an evolution of sorts within myself which I did not expect.  I was asked to be the MUA for this particular film and after reading the script I realized that the beauty end of things was extremely minimal.  This folks, is a film about sick, infected people who eventually perish and turn to zombies.  What? ??  This was going to be a challenge!  I have not really done film quality special f/x so what does one do?   I did tons of research and off I went with my blood, puke and festering wounds in hand.  Needless to say…I FELL IN LOVE.  I wasn’t so sure if I could pull this off but honestly, if you do your research and you have tons of love invested, it all turns out ok.  I may not be Oscar caliber  (yet) but so far, it looks really good on camera and I am so proud of what I have been able to accomplish.  Plus, I am realizing that this is definitely something I want to pursue for the long haul.  I love beauty makeup and I always will but there is something so cool about special f/x.

Anyway, I really just want to say that I am so grateful for the path I have been shown.  I am especially grateful that my mind opened up to allow me to see the endless possibilities that exist.  My experiences are what I choose to make them but it truly helps when you are in the company of wonderful people.

My wish for you for 2013 ……Open up and allow yourself to evolve and to see  all this great universe has to offer.

The business of makeup brushes

I have spent the better part of my life deeply engrained in the world of makeup.  It is fascinating to me how one can wake up looking like the dog and then walk out the door looking like a supermodel.  That is………… if it is applied right.  Makeup artistry is not for the faint of heart.  To work in this field or even apply your own makeup seriously you need to be on your game and understand the different shapes of the face and how to highlight, contour, accentuate and enhance what lies before you in the mirror.  It truly is an art form.  With that said, an artist needs proper tools.  Let’s talk brushes.

Now so not to sound snobbish, I want the reader to know that I have tried everything when it comes to brushes.  When I was a young gal,  I was not about to spend $25 on an eyeshadow brush.  I will use what the product came with or get that 50 piece brush set on sale at Ulta.  Experience has taught me everything!  All I can say is “don’t do it!!”.  If you are serious about makeup then you need to be serious about your brushes. It has taken me a long long time to build my brush collection and I take immaculate care of them.  Below is a list of my personal favorites.  This is what you should invest in for your own personal collection.  I use them on clients as well as myself every day.  If you are working as an MUA then you will need a few of each, especially if you are working on multiple clients in one day.  It is way more sanitary as well as easier for you to work.

My holy grail from bottom to top.

1)  MAC 219 – For precision shading on lid, in eye crease or along lash line. The soft, smooth fibers of this brush are gathered into a pencil-shaped tip. It is ideal for blending eyeliner into eye shadow to create a smoky looking eye.  A must.

2) Sigma EO5 Eyeliner brush -Fine tipped and tapered. Create smooth and even lines.  Use with gel or liquid liners.  This brush does the trick to create the most perfect cat eye.

3) MAC 217 – For shading or blending of color or creamy products. This brush has fine, densely packed fibers that are arranged in an oval shape.  Today I used my Kroylan dermacolor lip palate (DL16) on my eyelids.   This brush buffed it out PERFECTLY and gave me an intense dark burgundy that wouldn’t have blended properly if not for the right brush.

4) MAC 239 – Soft and dense to shade or blend eye shadow or emollient-based products. This brush has a tapered, rounded edge with smooth, firm, fine fibers. It can be used to build intense color on the eyelid.  I also will apply a gel eyeliner with this brush in my waterline as well as set my lash line and tight line.  It works like a charm.

5)Napoleon concealer brush – The density of the brush hair acts as a reservoir to hold and release the product onto the skin.  The hair is super soft and the product just glides on.  I use this as a precision lip brush as well.  It applies lipstick flawless.

6) Real Techniques buffing brush –  ideal for full coverage application of powder and mineral foundation.  By FAR the most outstanding foundation brush ever to touch my face.  You can go light as well as heavy.  The brush allows you to build the product as you feel necessary.  Plus I LOVE Sam Chapman (and Nic as well) so anything from her you have to believe is true quality!

So there you have it.  These brushes are one of many in my collection  but they are the most loved and the brushes that I depend on daily.  I can do everything I need to do with these and still look like a million bucks.  If you’re like me and experiment with new looks then trust me when I tell you that if you have these, you can pretty much pull of any look you want.
